Starfield Mantis Quest Walkthrough (Step by Step)

In Starfield, the Mantis is a legendary ship that players can get through a specific side quest. The ship, also known as the Razorleaf, comes with unique features like shielded cargo space, making it a highly sought-after vessel for various in-game activities. The quest to obtain it also rewards players with a special Mantis armor set.

The Mantis armor set comes with the ability to blend with the environment when you're sneaking and not moving, and the Razorleaf ship has a jump range of 19 light-years, which allows for considerable travel between star systems.

Starfield Mantis Quest

Starfield Mantis quest can be done by first finding a note labeled 'Secret Outpost!' or by defeating "spacers." This leads to Denebola I-b, where the Mantis Lair is located. Inside, navigate through enemies and traps, solve a floor puzzle by walking on letters T-Y-R-A-N-N-I-S, and finally, interact with a computer panel to claim the Mantis ship and armor set.

Starting the Mantis Quest

  1. Find the Note: The quest kicks off when you find a note on a dead enemy labeled 'Secret Outpost!'. This note triggers the Mantis quest. You can also find this quest by killing and looting "spacers" (Starfield's version of bandits).
  2. Location: The quest will lead you to Denebola I-b. This is a static location, so even if you don't have the note, you can go there.

To start Mantis quest, find a note on a dead enemy that has the label 'Secret Outpost.' This note serves as the key to initiating the Mantis quest. However, it's worth noting that the quest can also be acquired randomly by killing and looting spacers, who are essentially the bandits in the Starfield universe.

Once you have the note or datapad, the quest will direct you to a specific location: Denebola I-b. This location is static, meaning it doesn't change. So technically, you could go there even without finding the note. It's recommended to be between level 10 and 20 before taking on this quest, as you'll encounter enemies as high as level 25.

Inside the Mantis Lair

  1. Fight Your Way: Once inside the outpost, you'll need to fight through enemies and traps. The lair is filled with tight corridors, which are great for stealth.
  2. Interact: Look for an intercom on the wall midway through the lair. It has a recorded message from the Mantis.

Once you've arrived at the designated location on Denebola I-b, you'll enter the Mantis lair, a complex filled with tight corridors and enemies, so be aware of your surroundings and make use of cover to avoid being overwhelmed. The lair's design is conducive to stealth tactics, so use the environment to your advantage to take down enemies quietly or evade them altogether.

As you navigate through the lair, always loot the bodies of defeated enemies. Some of these will contain datapads that offer valuable insights into the Mantis figure and the lair itself. These datapads can provide context and clues that may assist you in later stages of the quest.

Midway through the lair, you'll encounter an intercom on the wall. Interacting with this device will play a recorded message from the Mantis, which serves as both a lore element and a hint for what's to come. Pay close attention to the message, as it may contain information that could be useful for solving upcoming puzzles or defeating enemies.

Solving the Mantis Puzzle

  1. The Grid: You'll come across a chamber with eight rows of letters on the floor.
  2. The Solution: Walk across the letters T-Y-R-A-N-N-I-S to disable the trap.

In the Mantis lair, you'll encounter the Mantis puzzle in a chamber with 8 rows of letters on the floor, and your objective is to walk across them in a specific sequence to disable a trap. The clue to solving this puzzle comes from an audio log you'll find earlier in the lair, titled "Leon Voclain - Sic Semper Tyrannis." The log hints that you need to spell the word "TYRANNIS" using the letters on the floor.

To solve the Mantis puzzle, carefully step on each letter in this order T-Y-R-A-N-N-I-S. If done correctly, you'll reach the other side of the chamber safely. Once there, you'll find a button that you must press to permanently disable the trap. If you make a mistake and step on the wrong letters, automatic turrets will activate, and the chamber's doors will seal shut. In that case, you'll need to reach the button on the other side to deactivate the turrets and continue.

Claiming Your Rewards

  1. The Ship: The Mantis ship, also known as the Razorleaf, is one of the best ships in Starfield. It has shielded cargo space, making it easier to smuggle contraband.
  2. The Armor: You'll also get the Mantis armor set, which includes a Helmet, Suit, and Boost Pack.
  3. How to Claim: To claim these, you'll find a computer panel that you can interact with to unlock the Razorleaf and the Mantis armor set.

To claim the Mantis ship, you'll need to locate a specific computer panel within the Mantis lair. Interacting with this panel will unlock the ship, elevating it to a landing pad located above the lair. This makes the Razorleaf accessible for you to pilot, complete with shielded cargo space for smuggling contraband without detection.

For the Mantis armor set, you'll find it displayed on a mannequin inside a glass case within the lair. The set includes a Helmet, Suit, and Boost Pack, each with unique abilities. To claim the armor, simply follow your objective marker to the nearby bedroom where the display case is located. Open the container to loot the Mantis armor, adding it to your inventory for immediate use.
