The "Entangled" mission is one of the final main story quests in Starfield. Players are taken to the Nishina Research Station, where a recent experiment has gone wrong. Freya, on Planet Freya III, players find themselves at the Nishina Research Station, responding to a bad signal from a facility where a mysterious Artifact resides.
Rafael is the engineer trapped in one dimension due to a reactor blast that claimed the lives of his colleagues. The experiment's failure has led to two outcomes, with players switching between two universes.
The Two Universes:
- In one universe, the majority of the facility's inhabitants survived, with only Rafael meeting his demise in the accident.
- In the alternate universe, Rafael is the sole survivor, and the facility is infested with alien creatures.
Upon reaching the quest's climax, you need to deactivate the machine used in the experiment. This machine is still operational and prevents access to one of the Artefacts. You are told that you can only save one universe, forcing a choice between saving Rafael or the rest of the facility. This mission offers multiple outcomes, but it is possible to save both universes.
How To Save Both Universes
To save both universes, locate Rafael's "Probe Calibration Protocol" note and activate switches in the doomed universe. Perform a degaussing process in both realms, calibrate frequencies, and engage the Primary Calibration Control. Here's a breakdown of the steps:
Step 1. Find Probe Calibration Protocol
In the regular universe, find Rafael's body beneath the control room. He has the "Probe Calibration Protocol" text log, which is a series of 8 instructions that can deactivate the machine correctly.

Step 2. Lab Control Computer
Go to the Lab Control Computer, which is located in the room's upper section. This lab can be accessed directly, while distortions must be used to enter the regular one.

Step 3. Degaussing in Both Realities
From the computer, select the "Degaussing" option. Toggle specific numbered switches off and then on again. Each switch's number is visible upon inspection with blue indicators. Repeat the process for both universes. Each universe will have different switches to toggle.

Step 4. Frequency Calibration
After Degaussing, return to the computer and initiate "Frequency Calibration." Select different "Output Frequency" options for each universe. The correct frequencies are:
- Regular Universe: 40 GHz
- Overrun Universe: 24 GHz

Step 5. Activate Primary Calibration
After completing this step, activate the "Primary Calibration Control" buttons in both universes. This will synchronize the two universes and ensure their mutual preservation. Successfully executing these steps will save all facility members.

The Reward
Save Who | XP Earned | Credits Earned |
---|---|---|
Save Rafael only | 800 XP | 14,800 credits |
Save everyone at the research station (excluding Rafael) | 800 XP | 11,800 credits |
Save everyone across both realities | 800 XP | 19,000 credits |
Upon completing the quest, saving Rafael rewards you with 800 XP, 14,800 credits, and various crafting materials, and you can later recruit him as a companion at the Viewport in New Atlantis. Saving only the entire research station grants you 800 XP, 11,800 credits, and the experimental Nishina helmet and spacesuit. If you save everyone across both universes, you'll receive 800 XP, 19,000 credits, the Nishina gear, and the opportunity to have Rafael as a companion.
