Starfield places significant emphasis on ships, essential for navigating its myriad star systems and combating space brigands. The game offers intricate ship-construction features, complemented by specialized vendors offering ship components and enhancements.
As you progress, you will eventually come across and acquire ships with enhanced storage, speed, and weaponry. If you're looking to declutter your ship collection and gain some precious Credits, here's your guide to selling ships in Starfield.
How To Sell Ships in Starfield
To sell ships, visit any ship services technician or the shipbuilder kiosk at your outpost. Upon choosing to buy or sell, navigate to the ship you want to sell and choose the 'sell' option, typically found at the bottom right corner of the screen.
You need to own more than one ship to sell any because you must always have a home ship. For legally acquired ships without contraband, simply head to a spaceport equipped with a ship services technician to sell the ship. However, selling a stolen ship or one with contraband involves additional steps.

How to Sell Stolen Ships
To sell a stolen ship in Starfield, go to a Ship Service vendor. Select the option to buy a ship, then click the sell tab. Choose your stolen ship and there will be a registration option at the bottom right. Pay the registration fee and you can sell the ship as normal.
1. Locate a Ship Services Technician: These technicians can be found on various planets. For example, in Akila City, one can be located near where your ship lands in Jemison.

2. Choose the Option to See Available Ships: Approach and talk to the technician. This is where you can modify, upgrade, and buy ships. Select the option to see what the technician has for sale.

You will see a pop-up message "One of your ships is unregistered. You must register this ship before you can modify or upgrade it." This means the ship is stolen and can't be sold until it is registered.

3. Register The Stolen Ship: On the bottom right corner, choose "Register", and it will ask you for the registration fee. Once the fee is paid and the stolen ship is registered, you can sell it.

You Cannot Sell Your Home Ship
If you have the stolen ship set as your current Home Ship, you will get a pop-up message "You cannot sell your home ship."

Change your home ship to another ship by existing the Buy/Sell screen, back to the technician dialogue screen, and choosing "view and modify my ships" to select a different ship as your home ship.

Is Selling Stolen Ships Worth It?
Stealing a ship is not a walk in the park. Players might need to confront and defeat the ship's previous owners or evade law enforcement. There's also the potential of gaining a reputation as a thief, which could have long-term consequences in the game, affecting interactions with NPCs and other players.
Before a stolen ship can be sold, it must be registered. In many cases, the registration fee can be high, sometimes reaching up to 90% of the ship's total value. For instance, a ship that could be sold for 14,000 credits might require a 12,000-credit registration fee. This leaves a meager 2,000-credit profit, which might not justify the risks and efforts involved in the theft.
When weighing these risks against the potential reward, especially considering the high registration fees, it is clear that stealing ships for profit might not be the most lucrative venture in Starfield.
