How to Change Difficulty in Diablo 4 (2 Easy Ways)

In Diablo 4, each World Tier offers a unique gameplay experience that distinguishes it from the previous levels. As you advance the tiers, you'll encounter increasingly challenging enemies that require more advanced strategies and better gear to defeat.

The loot quality improves significantly, offering a higher chance of rare and legendary items that can drastically enhance your character's abilities. Additionally, some tiers may grant access to exclusive dungeons or quests, providing new opportunities for high-level play.

Players have the flexibility to adjust the World Tier difficulty modes in 2 ways. You can either change the World Tier in the character section menu or use the World Tier Statue located in hub areas like Kyovashad.

Changing Difficulty In-Game

The most straightforward way to change your difficulty level is through the World Tier Statue. This statue is usually located in hub areas like Kyovashad, where players often gather for quests, trading, and other activities.

Steps:

  1. Approach the Statue: Walk up to the World Tier Statue in Kyovashad or any other hub.
  2. Interact: Press the interaction key (usually 'E' on PC, 'X' on PlayStation, or 'A' on Xbox) to bring up the World Tier menu.
  3. Select Tier: Use the arrow keys or thumbstick to navigate through the available World Tiers. The menu will display the rewards and challenges associated with each tier.
  4. Confirm: Once you've made your selection, confirm it to apply the changes.

Changing Difficulty via the Character Select Menu

Steps

  1. Exit to Main Menu: Save your game and exit to the main menu.
  2. Character Select: Navigate to the 'Character Select' screen.
  3. Options: Highlight your character and look for the 'Options' or 'Settings' button.
  4. Difficulty: Navigate to the 'Difficulty' tab, where you'll find the World Tier settings.
  5. Select and Confirm: Just like with the World Tier Statue, select your desired tier and confirm your choice.

World Tier 1 (Adventurer)

  • Overview: While being the entry-level difficulty, Adventurer is not a walk in the park. Enemies have minimal health and damage, but certain classes may still find them challenging.

World Tier 2 (Veteran)

  • Overview: Comparable to the "normal" difficulty in most games, Veteran should not be taken lightly. It's advisable to equip decent gear before venturing into this tier.
  • Bonuses: Earn a 20% XP boost and a 15% increase in gold.

World Tier 3 (Nightmare)

  • Unlock Requirements: Complete the campaign and the Cathedral of Light Capstone Dungeon in Kyovashad while on Veteran difficulty.
  • Level Range: 50-70
  • Overview: Nightmare introduces new endgame systems like Nightmare Dungeon and Helltide, along with harder-to-kill enemies who can overcome 20% resistance.
  • Bonuses: Gain a 100% XP boost and a 15% gold increase.
  • Special Features:
    • Sacred and Unique items can drop.
    • Nightmare Sigils for unsealing Nightmare Dungeons.
    • Helltides across Sanctuary.
    • Champions with resistance auras may spawn.

World Tier 4 (Torment)

  • Unlock Requirements: Complete the Fallen Temple Capstone Dungeon in Dry Steppes while on Nightmare difficulty.
  • Level Range: 70+
  • Overview: Torment is the ultimate challenge, featuring the strongest enemies with 40% resistance. If you are not properly geared, monsters will often kill you in one hit.
  • Bonuses: Earn a 200% XP boost and a 15% gold increase.
  • Special Features: Ancestral and new Unique items can drop.

Why Change Difficulty

One of the most compelling reasons to increase your World Tier is the prospect of better rewards. Higher tiers offer a greater chance of dropping rare and legendary items, enhancing your character's abilities and making gameplay more rewarding.

If you're finding the game too easy, moving up a World Tier can provide the challenge you crave. Enemies become tougher, requiring more strategic gameplay and better utilization of your character's skills and equipment.

What World Tier To Choose

If you're looking for a more relaxed experience—perhaps to focus on story elements or exploration—lowering the World Tier can make the game less stressful while still enjoyable. If you are playing your alt and just want to level up as soon as possible, often the speed of World Tier 1 is faster than the 20% XP bonus in World Tier 2.

  • For Beginners: If you're new to Diablo 4, starting with the "Adventurer" tier is advisable. It allows you to get accustomed to the game mechanics without overwhelming you.
  • For Intermediate Players: If you have some experience and decent gear, the "Veteran" tier offers a balanced challenge along with a 20% XP and 15% gold boost.
  • For Experienced Players: If you're a seasoned player looking for endgame content and challenges, "Nightmare" or "Torment" would be the ideal choice. For example, if you're at level 70 and have completed the required Capstone Dungeon, jumping into "Torment" can offer you the highest level of challenge and the best rewards, including Ancient items.
