In Baldur's Gate 3, the House of Hope is a significant dungeon found in Act 3. Hope is trapped inside by Raphael and you need to go down the hatch to get the Orphic Hammer and rescue her. After you rescue Hope, you will face the boss Raphael.
1. Accessing the House of Hope
This dungeon is located in Avernus and is controlled by Raphael. It's easy to overlook this location if you don't thoroughly explore the game. To access it, you need to perform the Helsik Ritual at the Devil's Fee in the Lower City.
2. Engage With Hope
Hope has been imprisoned by Raphael's machinations. As you interact with her, she'll magically transform your attire to resemble that of the debtors, who have been damned due to their pacts with the devil. This disguise ensures that the NPCs in the vicinity won't attack you.
- Inside the House of Hope, you'll meet Hope, who is trapped by Raphael.
- Engage in dialogue with her and ask questions.
- Hope will change your clothes to resemble those of debtors, ensuring NPCs won't attack you.
3. Find the Hatch in the Portal Chamber
As you navigate through the House of Hope, you'll come across a portal chamber that connects to various realms. There's a hatch near the portal chamber's entrance that leads to Hope's prison. To free Hope, you'll need the Orphic Hammer, which you'll obtain later.
- Discover a portal chamber leading to various realms.
- Find a hatch near the entrance leading to Hope's prison. You'll need the Orphic Hammer to free her later.
- Locate an Inert Infernal Gem on a wall. Passing certain checks reveals a hidden room with valuable items.
4. Find the Orphic Hammer (But Don't Take It)
Venturing to the western section of the House of Hope, Hope will inform you about the Archivist. By successfully passing skill checks, you'll discover that the Archivist fears Zariel's inquisitor, Verillius Receptor. This knowledge allows you to impersonate the inquisitor, ensuring the Archivist doesn't disturb you. Within this area, you'll spot several items, including the legendary Orphic Hammer. However, you'll need to strategize before grabbing any of these items.
- In the western part of the dungeon, Hope informs you about the Archivist.
- Learn about the Archivist's fears and use this knowledge to your advantage.
- Spot three significant items: the Orphic Hammer, Amulet of Greater Health, and Gauntlets of Hill Giant Strength. Don't take them yet.
5. Get a Key from Haarlep
The Archivist grants you access to the Boudoir, where you'll find a pool that rejuvenates your health, spell slots, and charges. You will meet Haarlep, and depending on your interactions, you can either work together with Haarlep or engage in combat. Regardless of your choice, you'll need a key from Haarlep for the next phase.
- The Archivist invites you to the Boudoir.
- Inside, find a pool for rejuvenation and meet Haarlep, an incubus.
- Decide whether to let Haarlep use your body as a disguise or confront him for a key to a safe.
6. Get the Orphic Hammer and Get Out
After obtaining the key, you'll need to open a safe and read a note inside. This note provides the necessary incantation for the Orphic Hammer. Before getting the hammer, ensure one of your characters is under the effect of Greater Invisibility. After securing the hammer and other items, quickly exit to the eastern side to avoid enemies.
- Open the safe to find words needed to interact with the Orphic Hammer.
- Before taking the Orphic Hammer, use Greater Invisibility on a character and steal two items.
- Interact with the Orphic Hammer and recite the correct phrase.
- Use Greater Invisibility on your party members and rush to the eastern side to avoid enemies.
7. Destroy 2 Crystals and Rescue Hope
To Rescue Hope, head down the hatch leading to the prison. Here, you'll need to destroy two crystals guarded by Observers using the Orphic Hammer. Once the crystals are destroyed, Hope will be freed.
- Head down the hatch to the prison.
- Control your party members individually and stay hidden.
- Destroy two crystals guarding Hope using the Orphic Hammer.
8. Fight the Boss Raphael
Upon saving Hope, rush to the main chamber. As you approach the entrance, Raphael will be there along with Yurgir from the Gauntlet of Shar. Make sure you target the Soul Pillars to weaken Raphael and utilize radiant magic for maximum damage.
How to Beat Raphael
Focus on Pillar of Souls: At the onset of the battle, prioritize attacking the four Pillars at the corners using radiant magic, as it's highly effective against them. Destroying these columns will weaken Raphael, making the fight a lot easier. Gather as many enemies as possible around the pillar and use the Black Hole Illithid spell. Ensure you cast it at least twice from different characters for maximum effect.
Spread Out: Raphael frequently uses area-of-effect (AOE) attacks. To mitigate this, position your team members widely across the room.
Allies: Yurgil will unleash a frontal blast similar to Thunderwave, driving the enemies further against the wall. He's resilient and possesses poison and life-draining attacks. Wyll's Hunger of Hadar spell can weaken and hurt the enemies, and his Eldritch Blast is highly effective against the pillars, especially if he wears Potent Robe. Use Shadow Heart's level 6 skill, Heroes' Feast, multiple times before confronting Raphael.
Utilize the Hold Monster Spell: If you have spell casters like Warlock, Wizard, Sorcerer, or Bard, the level 5 Hold Monster spell will paralyze Raphael if his Saving Throw of Wisdom fails. Hold Monster spell will make your damages within 3 meters to be crit damage.
Hope: Throughout the battle, Hope can consistently use her healing spells to keep your party alive. You can position Hope as far away as possible from the rest of the team and cast Sanctuary on her so that only the AoE can harm her. The only AoE threat came from the demon behind Raphael, but he mostly aimed at my team instead of targeting Hope.
Summon Minions: Summon as many minions as you can both before and during the Raphael fight. This will redirect the damage inflicted by enemies to your summoned minions, and buy you more time to destroy the columns while conserving your health.
Finish Raphael: When Raphael's health drops to 60%, he transforms into his devil form, which allows him more melee attacks. Continuously debuff Raphael with Hunger of Hadar, stun and burst him down with spells, radiant damage, and long-range assaults.
Reward
After defeating Raphael, you'll be rewarded with the Helldusk Armor and the Gloves of Soul Catching. The armor offers various benefits, including resistance to fire damage, while the gloves enhance your unarmed attacks and provide additional constitution. This is arguably the best Monk glove in Baldur's 3.
What Happens If Hope Dies?
If Hope dies, you will only miss the dialogue and the fight with Raphael will be harder as you won't have access to Hope's powerful healing abilities including Divine Intervention. The quest "Save Hope" will be completed with "Sadly she perished", and her body will be back at the camp after you defeat Raphael.
Hope's death is caused by using the damage mode of Divine Intervention, which will be reflected by Cambions as fire damage and this will wipe out most of the enemies and Hope will instantly die.
