Hirelings in Baldur's Gate 3 can affect the dynamics and strategies of a player's journey. While they may not offer the rich storyline or interpersonal interactions that the main characters do, they allow players to experiment class compositions and address specific challenges.
What are Hirelings in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Hirelings are recruitable party members you can hire for 100 gold to fight for you in battles. These mercenaries are often used as distractions to enemies while your companions cast powerful spells from a distance. Unlike companions such as Astarion or Shadowheart, Hirelings don't have backstories or personal quests.
There are 12 Hirelings with one from each of the classes, and every Hireling is a preset character designed with a unique, race, and appearance. While you can't modify these attributes, you do have the option to choose or respec their Class for 100 gold.
Hirelings have no personalities or content associated with themselves. Unlike romanceable characters Astarion, Gale, Halsin, Karlach, Lae'zel, Minthara, Shadowheart, and Wyll, you cannot romance Hirelings.
Hirelings will match your level when you hire them, and these characters provide a risk-free opportunity to try various classes. This means you won't have to respec any of your main companions, giving you the freedom to experiment with new subclasses, mix classes, or even have duplicates of a particular class.

How to Recruit Hirelings
To recruit Hirelings, find Withers in the Dank Crypt, located among the ruins to the north of your starting point on the beach following the crash. After answering his questions, come back to the camp and Whithers will offer services like reviving dead party members, changing classes, and recruiting Hirelings.
- Level Requirement: You have to be at least level 3.
- Hirelings Cost: Be ready to pay 100 gold for each Hireling you want to recruit.
- Hireling Limit: You can have up to three Hirelings at once.
- Party Space: Ensure you have room in your party when you approach Withers for a Hireling.
If you feel they're not a good fit, you can dismiss them and have them stay put at your camp, making space for another party member. If you change your mind, you can get them back by talking to Withers and paying 100 gold again.
