All crew members in Starfield have between 1 and 4 skills, mirroring the choices available to the player, and these are rated from one to four stars. When you assign a companion to a spot, they'll utilize their pertinent Starfield Skills that offer additional advantages.
The abilities of the crew members can either boost resource production or protect the outpost during an attack. With the Outpost Management skill, you can increase the number of crew members designated to an outpost. This guide will show you how to assign a crew member to your Outpost.
You Must Build a Crew Station First

To assign crew to an outpost in Starfield, you need to first establish an outpost on a habitable planet. Use the LB button to activate your scanner while on the planet and set up an Outpost Beacon using the X button.
Within this outpost, navigate to the Miscellaneous section in the building menu, and you'll see the option to construct a Crew Station by gathering two iron, five aluminum, and three nickel beforehand. Once you've collected the required materials, choose a location to set up the Crew Station.
After setting up a crew station at your outpost, access the main menu, choose the ship option in the bottom left, and press the Y button to view the "Crew" section. Use the A button to pick a crew member, revealing a submenu with all your outposts.
How to Assign Crew To Outpost in Starfield
To assign a crew member to an outpost, start by opening the main menu, choose the ship option in the bottom left, and press the Y button to view the "Crew" section. Choose a crew member using the A button, and you can assign that crew member to your desired Outpost.

For PC Users:
- Hit TAB to access the Starship Menu and choose 'Ship' located at the bottom left, or simply press H
- Use C to launch the Crew dashboard
- Select the crew member you wish to station at this outpost
- Choose your crew at the outpost by picking their name from the roster
It normally takes a little while for your crew member to show up at the Outpost. You can wait for a few hours for them to show up. Most of the time, they will show up outside of the Outpost instead of inside. You will see them by looking out the window or going outside to find them walking around the Outpost. You can talk to them, ask them questions, or trade gear with them.
Types of Crew Members
In Starfield, the crew is categorized based on their skills, experience, and expertise. From commanders to engineers, each crew member plays a unique role in the functioning of an outpost.
Different crew members have specific roles:
- Commanders: Oversee the entire outpost operations.
- Engineers: Handle technical and mechanical tasks.
- Medics: Ensure the health and well-being of the crew.
- Security Personnel: Protect the outpost from threats.
Assigning the wrong crew member can lead to reduced outpost efficiency. You can reassign crew members based on the changing needs of the outpost.
Each outpost has a maximum crew capacity, and you can increase your crew capacity by upgrading your ship with modules that increase your maximum crew capacity
