Using farms in Don't Starve Together is a key strategy for thriving in the game. From spider and pig farms to honey and kelp farms, each method offers unique benefits that cater to different survival needs. These farming techniques not only provide essential resources but also add depth and variety to your gameplay.
Spider Farm
To create a spider farm, locate a tier 3 spider nest and move it near your base. This relocation provides a steady supply of monster meat, silk, and spider glands. Be cautious when handling the nest, as it involves either fighting the spiders or using distractions.
You can enhance the spider farm by incorporating pigs or bunny men. These creatures assist in farming by battling spiders. However, they will consume any dropped meat, and bunny men will attack you if you pick up meat. Early game, the rarity of tier 3 nests and the challenge of fighting spiders yourself are significant hurdles.
Pig Farm
A pig farm can be constructed using a hammer to dismantle existing pig houses and fences for enclosure. For every two houses dismantled, you can build one near your base.
Pig farms offer multiple advantages. Pigs serve as allies in combat and labor. During a full moon, you can farm wear pigs by placing food in the pen, yielding two big meats and one pigskin. However, the full benefits of this farm are available only one night every 20 days, so it's advisable to have other farms as well.
Honey Farms
To start a honey farm, gather wooden planks, a weapon, a bug net, and find a field of bees. Catch several bees (avoiding the red ones) for every bee box you plan to make. Destroy beehives one at a time (or with pig assistance) to collect honeycombs.
Use butterflies, which transform into flowers, for bee pollination. However, be aware that bees do not produce honey in winter and become aggressive in spring. Therefore, it's best not to build your base too close to the honey farm to avoid aggressive bees during spring.
Kelp Farming
A kelp farm is established using a boat and ore. Find a suitable shoreline and use the boat to gather bulk kelp. Kelp is a resilient plant, regrowing every three days, even during winter, making it a reliable food source.
Bulk kelp is versatile, useful in various crockpot recipes, and can be dried for a sanity-boosting snack. If you discover the lunar Island, you can gather bleach bulk kelp stocks, which can be replanted near your base for even easier access.
Farm Plots with Garden Digamajig
To start your farm plot, use a garden digamajig. This tool allows you to grow a variety of crops, from common vegetables to unique plants. The key is to plant crops that thrive in the same season close together for optimal growth.
Regular maintenance of your farm plots is crucial. This includes tending to the crops, keeping weeds at bay, and ensuring each plant receives the right nutrients and water. These steps are vital for healthy crop growth and seed reproduction.
Managing nutrients and watering is essential for high-quality crops. While any seed will grow with basic care, applying the right nutrients and maintaining proper watering schedules ensures you get a seed back when harvesting, making your farm sustainable.
